I'm quite sure I either threw you off with the artwork or it just went completely over your head. Possibly to the point where you didn't care. I'm sure of it. I guess I'll explain myself. The familiar character in the drawing goes by the name of Punchy. Punchy is famous for actually offering a guy named Opus some Hawaiian Punch and severely knocking his ass out in a 1960s Hawaiian Punch commercial.
What does that have to do with anything? Everything. "808s", as far as my songwriting is concerned is referring to the synthesized bass in popular music. But that woulda been too easy to get a Roland TR-808 machine and use that picture. Let's go deeper. 808 is actually the Hawaii area code. Hawaiian Punch's original slogan was "let's have a party." Well I'm grown and we don't drink sugared beverages at nightclubs... Connect the dots. It's actually kinda artistic what I did there. Plus Punchy is holding a cocktail. You missed that.
Now... "808s & Liquor" is today's #TizzyTuesday installment. My brother Boom gave me this beat two years ago and I sat on the concept and decided it was time to put out this brilliant piece. Trust, I've never been overly into myself as a songwriter, but I believe this song may be one of the dopest pieces I've ever penned. I hope you feel the same.
Listen to the words and not just the beat.
